ABOUT THE PIECE
Life is (____)
Jason Treuting’s “amid the noise” is a set of ideas that can sound different every time. In this piece, the structure is formed by choosing words of a certain length out of the newspaper. Consonants and vowels have different rhythms, and each player has their own cycle to deal with. All of the other factors, like tempo and orchestration, are chosen by the performers.
For this Vic Firth series, we decided to make four versions to share. Since listeners usually assume that what they hear is THE way that a piece goes, we thought it would be fun to challenge that perception by showing how different the music can sound when mixing up those parameters.
Version three is our most commonly performed realization. Version four is part of a project to find a realization of “amid the noise” using only one piano.
