ABOUT THE PIECE:
murmur, was composed for SōSI 2015 (Sō Percussion Summer Institute). A quartet for two vibraphones, murmur features cardboard dowels from coat hangers standing in for more traditional mallets, creating a distinctive 'thwack' sound when striking the bars. The result is a blurring of pitch and noise, further explored through the use (or absence) of the pedal. murmur culminates in a chorale featuring ping pong balls and a bow, the percussive attack of the dowels now taken to a very delicate extreme.

I’m grateful to the murmur crew of SōSI 2015 for their incredible efforts and willingness to try the unconventional. Similarly, a very heartfelt thanks to Sandbox Percussion for their hard work and dedication on helping me to finalize murmur and bring it out into the world. They and Evan Chapman teamed up to create the incredible video featured here. Sandbox and Evan are a dream to work with—their unparalleled musicianship, professionalism, and enthusiasm is hard to beat. Plus, they're totally great guys to hang with! Thanks to Vic Firth for featuring this video...perhaps we'll see VF dowels or ping pong balls in the future? ABOUT THE COMPOSER:
Coming from a rock guitar background, Dave Molk embarked on jazz performance before shifting his focus solely to composition. Many of Dave's works are for small ensembles and solo instruments, although recent efforts include orchestra, black box theater, and live-remixing/DJing. He writes mainly for pitched and non-pitched percussion, combining sinuous chromaticism with an energized rhythmic propulsion, expressive timbres, and a healthy dose of glitch. He DJ's under the name Old Dirty Beathoven and plays the steel pan under the name Dave Molk (he needs to practice more). His current research is in software coding and EDM. Dave Molk is a doctoral fellow at Princeton University.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:
Brought together by their love of chamber music and the simple joy of playing together, Sandbox Percussion captivates audiences with performances that are both visually and aurally stunning. Through compelling collaborations with composers and performers, Jonathan Allen, Victor Caccese, Ian Rosenbaum and Terry Sweeney seek to engage a wider audience for classical music.
Sandbox made their New York debut in 2012 on the Concerts on the Slope series in Brooklyn. Following that performance, they accepted an invitation to become artists-in-residence of the series and have returned in each subsequent season. Later that year, Sandbox worked closely with composer James Wood on his masterpiece Village Burial with Fire at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. While at Norfolk, Sandbox played alongside the great Hungarian percussion quartet Amadinda – Aurél Holló, a member of Amadinda, later said about Sandbox: “With an array of skills, talent and freshness, these young artists seem to be pushing their limits up in the skies, as I realized listening to them at the Yale New Music Workshop. Sandbox Percussion is the promising group of the near future, battering right on your door.”

Last season, Sandbox gave twelve world premieres by composers such as Robert Sirota, Amy Beth Kirsten, David Crowell, Thomas Kotcheff, Alex Weiser, and Tonia Ko. Six of these were works by composition students at the Yale School of Music, and were featured on the New Music New Haven concert series. This past Spring Sandbox, along with flutist Tim Munro, performed the world premiere of Amy Beth Kirsten’s, They Might be Giants as members of a larger mixed ensemble, HOWL co-directed by Amy Beth Kirsten and Mark DeChiazza.

An Index of Possibility

Commissioned by a consortium of percussion trios led by TIGUE, An Index of Possibility explores the secret world of sound in everyday objects. Using found sounds, homemade constructions, and cheap toys Index unlocks a sonic palette exploding with color and variety. Cast in six movements, the music traverses a symphonic expanse, fluidly moving between ambient textures, visceral unisons and muscular virtuosity. A wistful lullaby tune, Repose, begins the piece. A kind of idée fixe, Repose will return two times, framing the three larger movements - Flicker, Flow and Burst. In Flicker piercing hits punctuate a tremulous layer of pulsating metal and wood. Flow begins with a mesmerizing rhythmic ostinato, gradually moving towards a strange and unexpected place as a new melody emerges in the tuned pipes. Long bell-tones signal a change of direction and then a second Repose appears only to be violently interrupted by the clangorous opening hits of Burst. Erupting into a wild torrent of rhythms traversing the full range of the setup, Burst is the work’s focal point. After barreling through Burst the final Repose brings the music to a hushed conclusion. While virtually the same as the opening, this last Repose feels somehow transformed, touched by the long journey of An Index of Possibility.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER:
Celebrated for his “roiling, insistent orchestral figuration” (New York Times) and “glittery, percussive pieces” (Toronto Globe and Mail), composer Robert Honstein (b. 1980) is a composer of orchestral, chamber, and vocal music.

His works have been performed throughout North America by ensembles such as the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, the New York Youth Symphony, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, eighth blackbird, Ensemble ACJW, Ensemble Dal Niente, the Mivos quartet, the Del Sol Quartet, Concert Black, TIGUE, and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, among others. He has received an Aaron Copland Award, multiple ASCAP awards and other honors from SCI, Carnegie Hall, and New Music USA. He has also received residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Copland House, the Bang on a Can Summer Institute, and the Tanglewood Music Center.

ABOUT THE PIECE:
Locomotion was commissioned by Ad Astra Percussion and Listen! Percussion Group in the spring of 2012 and was co-premiered on April 27, 2013. The work is written for 9 tom toms, 9 flower pots, 9 skillets and 9 boos (a boo is a log drum-like instrument invented by composer/instrument designer Harry Partch). The title of each movement refers to some sort of “Locomotion,” in this case referring to physical movement. Procession, as the title implies, is an introduction of the instruments to the audience. In Sleepwalk the performers use Super Ball mallets to create an undulating and ever-transforming texture. Dance involves the performers switching between 13 different implements including chopsticks, dowel rods, cork mallets and split bamboo while making drastic accelerations and decelerations in tempo. Race is an extremely polyrhythmic movement in which the composer used random numbers from the website random.org to determine the number of notes played by each person as well as time signatures and the number of repeats. The amalgam of sound created from the combination of textures and the dense polyrhythms at times become completely alien. The unusual instrumentation and unique mallets in Locomotion create textures found in no other music.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER:
Dave Hollinden's music reflects an innate predisposition toward rhythm, counting and number. He has composed extensively for percussion in solo, ensemble, and chamber settings, and his music is widely performed in the US and overseas. Portrait concerts dedicated to his works were held at Rowan University in 2007 and the University of Michigan in 2013.

Recordings of his music appear on CDs by Joseph Gramley, Ethos Percussion Group, Base Four Percussion Quartet, Sole Nero, Eclectic Trio/Crescent Duo, Norman Weinberg, Michael Burritt, and Equilibrium/Michael Udow. The CD Slender Beams, created by Hollinden and percussionist Andrew Spencer, features live and studio recordings of his music.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:
Formed in Lawrence, Kansas in 2012, Ad Astra Percussion (Von Hansen, Luke Dull, Tai-Jung Tsai and Mai Tadokoro) is an exciting and dynamic quartet dedicated to playing contemporary percussion music. Using a palette of anything from marimbas and snare drums to auto parts and teacups, they create a musical landscape that is both familiar and intriguing. This expansive instrumentation allows their repertoire to range from explosive and raucous to delicate and ethereal. Ad Astra Percussion is rooted in performing compositions by masters such as John Cage and Steve Reich while championing works of contemporary composers. The members of Ad Astra Percussion have performed a centennial celebration of the music of John Cage for the Spencer Art Museum’s Concert Series, The Grace Cathedral Great Spaces Concert Series and various concerts throughout Kansas and Missouri. ABOUT JOHN WOOTON
Dr. John Wooton is Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). At USM, Wooton directs the percussion ensemble, steel pan orchestra, graduate percussion ensemble, and samba band. He also performs regularly on steel pans as a soloist or with his band, KAISO!, and plays vibes for the USM Jazz Quintet. Wooton was a member of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from 1981 to 1984. During those years, he was the winner of Drum Corps Midwest Snare Drum Competition and the PAS Individual Snare Drum Competition. Wooton has also served as a percussion caption head for the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. He is presently a member of the PAS Marching Percussion Committee. Wooten is the author of “The Drummer’s Rudimental Reference Book” and "Dr. Throwdown's Rudimental Remedies.”

ABOUT THE PIECE:

"The Song of Trees shows the strong energy of a big tree, floating and falling leaves, and finally the joy of the rise of the shutes. The basic theme of this piece is to feel the whole life of the tree. After the short sequence, suddenly the theme appears showing the existence of the big tree. Then the theme is divided into each phrase changing the form. One phrase is sung quietly and the other is showing the energy which gradually increases the power and reaches the climax. The phrases are as if they are showing the birth of the young tree. Finally the short coda brings back to the fragment of the first theme."

ABOUT THE PERFORMER:

Having studied marimba in Japan with Keiko Abe (JP), Felix Reyes has long had an interest in commissions and projects revolved around and promote Japanese contemporary marimba music. As a rising percussionist, Felix Reyes is always looking for ways to incorporate his chamber music training with his studies of Japanese music. As a native to New York, Felix has performed with chamber ensembles throughout New York City in venues such as Carnegie Hall, National Sawdust, The Lincoln Center, Kaufman Music Centerl, and universities across the U.S. such as Indiana University, Princeton University, the University of Notre Dame, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Humboldt State University, and the University of Georgia. Felix has also performed internationally in countries such as El Salvador, Japan and Germany. 

Over the years in his travels he has performed in countless workshops and has worked with countless acclaimed international artists and composers that include all of Sō Percussion (USA), Third Coast Percussion (USA), Katarzyna Mycka (DE),  Ney Rosauro (BR), Jean Geoffrey (F), Conrado Moya (E), Filip Mercep (CRO), Michael Colgrass (USA), Dai Fujikura (JP), Jennifer Hidgon (USA), and Kaoru Watanabe (JP).

Felix Reyes recently graduated with his Master’s in Percussion Performance from Bowling Green State University where he studied percussion under Dr. Daniel Piccolo (USA) and marimba specialist Dr. Isabelle Huang(TW). Felix has also received his Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance at the State University of New York at Fredonia under the direction of Dr. Karolyn Stonefelt (USA) and has studied Marimba Performance at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Sengawa, Japan with legendary marimba virtuoso Keiko Abe (JP).

Felix currently lives in New York City where he works as studio manager for Sandbox Percussion and international taiko soloist Kaoru Watanabe, is a freelance percussionist, and teaches percussion privately in various capacities, including a roster of students from Brooklyn and Long Island, NY. His current activities include organizing a tour throughout New York City and Arcata, California, with Swiss percussion soloist Fabian Ziegler (CH) for May 2018, and working on other Vic Firth premieres of new commissions by Princeton composers Wally Gunn (USA), and Dave Molk (USA). He is a proud endorser of Vic Firth sticks and mallets.

While commonly referred to as a “rhythmic scientist” due to his mastery of highly technical rhythms and time signatures, it’s Matt’s ability to lay the technical wizardry into a deep-seated groove that has driven his meteoric rise in the drumming community.

“Matt told us that he played lighter sticks as a young kid, but as he grew older and got into more aggressive styles of music, the heavier, thicker sticks didn’t deliver the finesse he wanted,” says Neil Larrivee, Vice President of Education and Drumstick Product Development.

The Matt Garstka Signature Stick was designed with a unique alchemy of taper, tip and weight, providing the perfect symmetry between power, speed, balance and sound. The diameter is halfway between the 55A and the Buddy Rich Signature Stick, and is 16” in length. The way the profile blends seamlessly from the shaft, through the taper, and into the tip is key to producing amazing flex and response and a clear, full-bodied sound on the cymbal.
