ABOUT THE PIECE:
A Sense of Place by Peter Klatzow brings together marimba and cello in a dark, brooding duet. Written to highlight the marimba's African roots against the classical sound of a cello, this piece was inspired by two artworks by Cecil Knotes.
The composition is written in a style that emphasizes what each instrument does best - the marimba plays flurries of notes across its range while maintaining rhythmical pulse, and the cello sings its lyrical lines overtop this wooden base.
Klatzow blends traditional tonality with a comfortable amount of 'other' colors that will appeal to casual and academic audiences alike.
