Tango by Igor Stravinsky was written for piano solo in 1940 after moving to Hollywood. After moving to America, Stravinsky was unable to receive royalties on his works composed while he was in Europe due to copyright and other ambiguities. As he found himself in financial trouble, he decided to write a handful of pieces purely in America, with the sole intent of mass selling and making money. Tango is the first of these works written entirely in America, and has since become one of the most recorded works of Stravinsky’s, transcribed and arranged in many different forms and settings. Unlike many of Stravinsky’s music, Tango is a tonal work, remaining in D minor with a trio section in D major, and rhythmically staying stationary in mostly 4/4 bars and 4 bar phrases. However, he rarely uses rhythmic emphasis on beat 4 as in a typical tango, and more focuses on the 2nd beat, giving the piece a unique “Stravinsky atmosphere”.
